Ava Roosevelt: 'I was almost the Manson Family's sixth victim'

Every year on August 9th, family and friends mourn yet another anniversary of the brutal Manson Family murder of actress Sharon Tate and four others. But there's one woman who says "thank you."

Ava Roosevelt, a socialite, author, former countess, and friend of Sharon Tate, thanks fate for intervening and preventing her from being Manson's sixth victim.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, the 66-year-old says her broken down Rolls Royce is the only reason she's alive today. She told the Post's Julia Marsh, "I've always said to myself how incredibly lucky i am."

"Luck" may be the only word to describe it.

Roosevelt claims that on the night of August 9, 1969 she was invited to Tate's Beverly Hills home for dinner with friends, but just hours before the Manson Family attacked, the gas gauge on Roosevelt's Rolls Royce started acting up. She decided not to go, and that decision saved her life.

Three of cult leader Charles Manson's followers broke into the pregnant 26-year-old actress's home, killing her and four of her good friends. The next day they would kill again, this time a couple in their LA home. Manson and a number of his followers would eventually be sentenced to life in prison.

Roosevelt, who was just 19 at the time of the murders, and had already been married to a French count and Mia Farrow's brother, would go on to marry a steel magnate and President FDR's grandson.
